Storm readiness is a property plan: identify meaningful concerns, protect access, document priorities, and make decisions before conditions become urgent.

Storm readiness is not a promise of storm proofing

No pruning treatment can make a tree immune to hurricane-force wind, saturated soil, flying debris, or a changing storm track. Trees are living structures, and extreme weather can exceed the conditions they have previously experienced. A responsible plan reduces identifiable concerns and improves preparedness without implying that failure is impossible.

That distinction matters because fear can lead to unnecessary removal or overly aggressive pruning. The objective is not to strip every canopy or remove every large tree. It is to evaluate meaningful defects, targets, access routes, and property priorities while there is still time to choose an appropriate response.

Walk the property from the targets outward

Begin with the places people depend on: bedrooms, parking areas, primary entrances, driveways, stairs, decks, pools, play areas, rental paths, utility equipment, and emergency access. Then look at the trees and branches that could affect those areas. This target-first approach helps focus attention where consequences would be greatest.

Include more than the largest tree. A smaller dead tree close to a doorway, a suspended branch over a path, or a compromised tree beside the only driveway may deserve higher priority than a larger tree over an unused corner. Also note trees on neighboring property that could affect your site; resolving access and ownership questions takes time.

Look for change, not just size

Useful observations include recent lean, root-plate movement, cracks, hanging limbs, dead tops, major branch dieback, new cavities, broken attachments, and branches repeatedly striking structures. Recent excavation, trenching, fill, flooding, drainage work, or removal of nearby trees can be just as important as what is visible in the canopy.

Large size alone does not establish that a tree is hazardous. Likewise, a green canopy does not prove that the root system or major unions are sound. When a concern involves a valuable tree or a high-consequence target, an on-site assessment is more useful than a photograph-only opinion.

Separate immediate controls from planned work

A useful review produces priorities. Immediate controls may include moving vehicles, closing a seating area, changing a pedestrian route, or keeping an occupied room clear until a tree can be assessed. Near-term work may include removing a suspended limb or addressing a specific structural concern. Routine clearance and young-tree pruning can be scheduled separately.

This prevents maintenance items from competing with urgent concerns and helps owners spend responsibly. It also supports phased care on larger properties: first control exposure, then complete priority tree work, then schedule improvements that strengthen the long-term maintenance program.

Do not use topping as storm preparation

Topping removes large portions of the canopy without regard for natural branch structure. The resulting wounds and vigorous shoots can create long-term health and attachment problems. A tree that has been topped may look temporarily shorter, but the treatment does not create a durable storm-readiness strategy.

Appropriate pruning is selective and tied to an objective. It may remove dead or broken branches, improve specific branch relationships, create necessary clearance, or reduce a particular end weight. The prescription should preserve useful live canopy and explain what the work is expected to improve.

Plan equipment access while the site is dry

Tree work depends on more than the tree. Narrow drives, soft shoulders, septic systems, irrigation, gates, low wires, ornamental beds, rooflines, neighboring yards, traffic, and rental occupancy can determine which equipment is practical. Ground that supports equipment in a dry week may be inaccessible after days of rain.

Before storm season, identify gate codes, site contacts, parking controls, acceptable staging areas, and any permissions needed to cross or protect adjacent property. Confirm how debris will leave the site. A clear access plan makes both planned work and post-storm response more efficient.

Create a record for remote owners and managers

For a second home, HOA, commercial property, or managed portfolio, documentation is part of readiness. Maintain current site contacts, property access instructions, utility information, and a simple map or photo set showing priority trees. Keep completed scopes, invoices, and before-and-after photos in one place.

A good pre-season report should distinguish observation from recommendation and state which areas were reviewed. It should be understandable to someone who was not present for the site walk. Clear records reduce delays when a board, owner, insurer, or manager needs to make a time-sensitive decision.

After the storm: control access before evaluating damage

Do not begin by walking beneath damaged canopies. From a protected location, look for downed conductors, leaning utility poles, suspended limbs, split trunks, trees resting on other trees, moving root plates, and blocked emergency access. Keep people away and mark or close the area when it is safe to do so.

Storm-damaged wood can be under extreme tension or compression and may move unpredictably when cut. Chainsaw work, climbing, rigging, aerial-lift operation, and tree work around utilities require trained personnel, appropriate equipment, and a job-site assessment. A quick cleanup attempt can turn property damage into a life-safety emergency.

Electrical hazards come first

Assume every downed or contacted conductor is energized. A tree, branch, fence, vehicle, puddle, or piece of equipment can become part of the electrical path. Do not touch the tree, attempt to move a branch, or enter the area to take close photographs. Contact the utility owner and emergency services when appropriate.

Line-clearance tree work is specialized work governed by electrical safety requirements. The utility owner and qualified personnel must determine when the area is safe and how the tree operation will be coordinated. Ordinary tree-care equipment is not a substitute for electrical qualification.

A practical annual rhythm

Schedule broad property review early enough to preserve scheduling and access options. Complete priority work, document what remains, and revisit trees after major site changes or significant storms. Young trees may need periodic structural pruning; mature trees may need targeted inspection based on condition, targets, and past recommendations rather than an automatic annual cut.

The best readiness plan is specific enough to act on and simple enough to maintain. It identifies who makes decisions, who has site access, which targets matter most, what conditions require immediate closure, and which qualified contacts should be called before the next forecast becomes urgent.
